Full SlipsI will try to keep within the Full Slip category but some short Nightgowns can be used as slips and vice - versa. Today they are even using the term chemise (which I think of more for outerwear as the original of the name meant a smock or other covering worn over your clothing to protect the clothes underneath from soil and wear.) as a very short slip and some throw the word Charmeuse at you but this is not a garment but an opaque shiny fabric like satin.You may want to check the Gowns and Robes or Nighties links to see if anything there piques your interest. The advent of the slip has a long history but suffice to say they were invented to keep the rough wool or linen of the time from chaffing the wearer. Over time the slip as we recognize it today still serves this purpose but as fabrics became more soft, luxurious, and yes sexy the full slip has come to take the place of sexy nightwear as well. Women still use the full slip to comfort them when wearing a rough dress but they also wear them as sexual temptations designed to engage a lovers eye and as very comfortable sleepwear. With the advent of new synthetic materials the full slip has become more a lavish adornment than the utilitarian garment it was designed to be. Nylon and especially Antron and Antron III along with polyester and a tricot knit has revolutionized the way we view a slip. We wear them for comfort but we also wear them as lavish sexy, sensual extensions of our psyche and our desire to be feminine and perhaps a bit controlling in the bedroom. But long slips are becoming a fading memory as hemlines have gone up and neck lines have plunged the long slip is becoming harder and harder to find. Unless fashion changes they will become collectors items as even now many Mfg's are no longer producing long full slips and those that are, are not making them near as elaborate as they once were. If you are in the market for a long slip today you must settle for the drab at the department stores, if they carry them, or go to special boutiques and pay a small fortune for the elaborate that we have come to expect. Here you do not need to pay inflated prices so long as you are comfortable with pre-owned like new condition. Many of our slips one couldn't tell they were ever worn, even the tags look new and as you know this is the first to show age when washed.
